One of Archangel Michael’s most famous depictions, kept in the Byzantine and Christian Museum of Athens, Greece. Painted in the early14th century in Konstantinople by unknown artist.

Πασίγνωστη εικόνα του Αρχάγγελου Μιχαήλ, που φυλάσσεται στο Βυζαντινό μουσείο της Αθήνας. Ζωγραφίστηκε στις αρχές του 14ου αιώνα σε εργαστήριο της Κωνσταντινούπολης, και το όνομα του ζωγράφου μας είναι άγνωστο.

Είναι από τα έργα που αξίζει να μελετήσει κάθε σπουδαστής της βυζαντινής εικονογραφίας και από τα πρώτα που προτείνω ως άσκηση, αν και για να την αποδώσει κανείς χρειάζεται αρκετή καθοδήγηση από τον δάσκαλό του, καθώς οι φθορές των αιώνων την κάνουν κάπως δυσανάγνωστη.

A great work of art, worth studying by every student of Byzantine iconography. It is one of the first exercises I suggest to all my students, although lots of guidance may be needed.

Ο Αρχάγγελος εικονίζεται ως τη μέση και στο δεξί χέρι κρατάει σκήπτρο. Στο άλλο κρατάει τη σφαίρα του κόσμου με σταυρό και τα αρχικά Χ-Δ-Κ, που σημαίνουν Χριστός Δίκαιος Κριτής. Η σφαίρα έχει μια ιδιαιτερότητα για τον μαθητευόμενο αγιογράφο, καθώς είναι διάφανη και αφήνει να διαγράφεται η πτυχολογία του ενδύματος. Δυσδιάκριτη υπάρχει και μια μορφή κεφαλής λέοντα στη σφαίρα. Ο Αρχάγγελος είναι στραμμένος σχεδόν μετωπικά προς τον θεατή. Έχει πολύ καθαρό και έντονο βλέμμα, που σε κοιτάει κατάματα και σε κάνει να νιώθεις έντονη την παρουσία ή ακόμα και την επικοινωνία με τον εικονιζόμενο.

Πρόκειται για μια από τις πιο επιβλητικές εικόνες που έχω δει, είναι έργο μεγάλων διαστάσεων (110x80cm) και εξαιρετικής τέχνης. Η μορφή παραπέμπει στις μορφές των αγγέλων των τοιχογραφιών που βρίσκονται στη Μονή της Χώρας στην Κωνσταντινούπολη. Η Επιγραφή της γράφει: Ο ΆΡΧ ΜΙΧΑΗΛ Ο ΜΈΓΑC ΤΑΞΙΆΡΧΗC.

«From an iconographical point of view the Archangel can be connected with the figure of the Archangel Michael from the larger scene of the Last Judgement in the Chora Monastery in Constantinople (1315-1320).  Here too the rare initials on the globe are repeated.  The fact that the icon comes from Constantinople, its direct connection with the marvellous wall-paintings of the Chora Monastery and the high quality of the painting allow us to attribute this work to an important workshop based in Constantinople in the first half of the 14th century.

Ὁ ἌΡΧ(ΩΝ) ΜΙΧΑῊΛ Ὀ  ΜῈΓΑC ΤΑΞΙᾺΡΧΗ(C) (the Chief [among angels] Michael Grand Taxiarch) is depicted in a formal, frontal pose, with wings open, wearing a chiton and a himation.  In his right hand he holds a sceptre, while in his left he has the transparent globe of the world, with a cross on the top and the gold initials Χ Δ Κ (for Christ [Χρίστος] Just [Δίκαιος] Judge [Κριτής]) in the centre together with a depiction of a lion.

The image of the lion on the globe, the title given to the archangel and its association with the Angel Michael in the Last Judgement incline us to suppose that the scene has some eschatological context, that is that it refers to the Day of Judgement, an interpretation which the archangel in his capacity as psychopomp underscores.»
